The McNabb Center in Hamblen County showcased its Jail to Work program which gives Hamblen County inmates a second chance while providing them with recovery, re-entry and life skills training. Jail to Work alumni shared their experiences and program information while giving tours to various community representatives and members on Friday, February 28.The McNabb Center

The Jail to Work program, which began in 2017, has been successful in reducing recidivism and relapse through its three-month treatment program which provides rehabilitation services and teaches women relapse prevention and life skills. Once they complete this intensive substance abuse treatment program, they enter phase two — a four-month program allowing them to practice their new skills in a safe, substance-free environment.

Participants of Jail to Work are also taught nutrition, conflict resolution and job training skills through TCAT, Stepping Out and the UT Extension Institute of Agriculture. This training aids clients by preparing them for future employment opportunities found locally by McNabb Center staff and community partners.

According to a program alumnus, the life skills training and treatment she received daily was life-changing.

“The biggest thing for me was I’m not good enough. That was stuck in my head for years, my whole life, and to retrain my brain, that was the biggest deal for me,” she said explaining how a program staff member supported her. “It was somebody I could go to for anything.” Alumni often give back by being a support to new participants who are early in their recovery journey.

In attendance were former Mayors Bill Britain and David Purkey, alongside current Mayor and McNabb Center Evening of Hope Co-Chairperson Chris Cutshaw, Sheriff Chad Mullins, Judge Douglas Collins and many community partners who came to show their support.
